The largest gem shows on this continent? The most beautiful stones all in one place? It would be crazy not to go. It was a pretty easy decision to go to Arizona this year. After 35 years in the business, my wonderful dad thought it was about time we went to to the state where “Ditat Deus“, or “God enriches” (the state motto). We have made many friends in the stone industry over the years, and we really do want to see what the best of the business has in store for us (and you!). Not to mention the gorgeous surroundings! We are seriously looking forward to the red earth and blue skies. The high contrasts are already making me giddy. We’ll be sure to report back on our experience, and post some photos as well. If you’ve ever been to Arizona, let us know what we must check out! We’re only there for a few days, but we would like to soak up as much local culture as possible.

Heart & clovers, Joanna.

Of course I’m speaking of Elizabeth Taylor. She had jewels fit for a queen, so why not? Starting this past Tuesday, the major auction of her jewellery collection held at Christies in New York has been a record smashing event. On the first day, all 80 lots were sold, totaling nearly $116 million! By the second day the total was up to $137.2 million! What an achievement!

I stumbled upon the attached photo of a postcard sent from Elizabeth Taylor to her parents, and found it endearing, so I thought I would share it today. Hope it brings a smile to your face, as it did to mine.

- don’t sleep with it
- don’t clean with it
- don’t garden with it

Beyond these three recommendations, your jewellery will experience natural wear and tear.

Ideally, it is best to have your items professionally cleaned two to three times a year as most of the gemstones attract grease, rendering them without brilliance. At home you can carefully immerse your jewellery, in a solution of one part mild detergent soap diluted with five parts of warm water, for a few minutes. Brush gently with a clean soft toothbrush, and then carefully rinse with lukewarm water. Pat dry with paper towel.
When you purchase a jewellery piece from us, we will clean it free for life.

Green, rose, white,…gold.

Not gold? We use: Platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, silver, or stainless steel.
The choice of the metal is determined by design, gemstone use, purpose and use of the piece of jewellery, and your skin tone.

Platinum is recommend for use with white and cool-coloured gemstones, whereas warmer coloured gemstones such as red or green demands use of yellow gold.

We alloy all metals on premises. We work in 14kt, 18kt, 19kt, 22kt, sometimes for ornamental purposes we use pure 24kt gold. In cases where minimum metal is desired to manifest beauty of the gemstones, platinum, due to its toughness, is optimal.

We are pleased to discuss all possibilities of metal choice with our clients.

Did you know?

- The very word ‘diamond’ comes from the Greek term ‘adamas’ meaning unconquerable.

- The word ‘carat’ comes from the carob tree whose seed was used as the standard of weighing precious stones.

- Every diamond is immensely old. The youngest diamond is 900 million years old, and the oldest is 3.2 billion years old.

There are four unique characteristics of a diamond to consider. Learn about them below.

CUT – Refers to the angles and proportions of a diamond.

Everything about a diamond is determined by nature. The stone’s true brilliance, fire and ultimate beauty are a result of a master cutter’s work. Diamonds that are cut too deep or too shallow leak or lose light through the side or bottom, resulting in less brilliance and ultimately, value.

A good cut is essential to a diamond’s beauty, because even a diamond with outstanding color and clarity will not display the glitter that diamonds are famous for if its components don’t interact with light as they should. Of all the characteristics, the cut is most important. If you are given an offer on a diamond that seems like a great deal, pay special attention to the proportions of the cut.

CLARITY – Refers to the presence of inclusions in a diamond.

Every diamond is unique. Naturally occurring inclusions—provide a special mark of the stone. Inclusions are natural identifying flaws such as minerals or fractures, appearing while diamonds are formed in the earth. They may look like tiny crystals, clouds or feathers.

The position of inclusions affects the value of a diamond. Since there are so few flawless diamonds found in nature, they are more valuable.

Inclusions are ranked on a scale of perfection, known as clarity, which was established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The clarity scale, ranging from F (Flawless) to Included (I), is based on the visibility of inclusions at a magnification of 10x. The greater a diamond’s clarity, the more brilliant, valuable and rare it is.

COLOUR – Refers to the degree to which a diamond is colourless.

Diamonds are found in almost every colour imaginable, but white-coloured diamonds remain most popular.

Diamonds are graded on a colour scale established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) which ranges from D (colourless) to Z. Yellow coloured diamonds (J–Z) are particularly desirable when set in yellow gold. Icy winter whites (D–I) look stunning set in white gold or platinum.

Colours are graded under simulated North light (natural daylight occurring between noon and 2pm) and are compared to a master set for accuracy.

Diamonds also come in varying shades of yellow, orange, pink, blue, green, or – rarest of all – red. These diamonds are called ‘coloured fancies’ and are extremely rare and not readily available.

CARAT – Refers to the weight of a diamond.

Carat is often confused with size even though it is actually a measure of weight. One metric carat is equivalent to 1/5 of a gram. One carat is usually divided into 100 ‘points’. A 0.50 carat diamond is the same as a 50-points or 1/2 carat diamond.

Cost of diamonds rises exponentially with their size. It takes about 10,000 stones to find a 1-carat stone among them. Cut and mounting can make a diamond appear larger (or smaller) than its actual weight. We’ll help you find the right diamond and setting to optimize the beauty of your stone

A continuous metal band, signifying unity, has been worn by couples since ancient times. From simple plain bands to a mosaic of Algonquin Park to six running horses, your wedding band should reflect you as a person, your experiences together, and your unity. Your wedding bands should be as unique as your relationship.

The Egyptians started the tradition of wearing a wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand thousands of years ago. They believed that a vein in that finger, called vena amoris, or ‘love vein’, traveled directly to the heart.

Let us create something from your heart that will be linked to your loved one’s heart.
